『Led Zeppelin IV』は、題名を持たない第4作である。前作への冷ややかな批評に応えるように、バンドは表紙から一切の文字を消し、4人がそれぞれ選んだ記号だけを掲げた。録音は1970年12月から翌年2月、大半がハンプシャーの古い館ヘッドリー・グレンジで、ローリング・ストーンズの移動スタジオを使って行われている。エンジニアはアンディ・ジョンズ。“Rock and Roll”のピアノはストーンズのイアン・スチュワート、“The Battle of Evermore”ではフェアポート・コンヴェンションのサンディ・デニーが歌い、彼女はLED ZEPPELINの全作品で唯一の客演歌手となった。 “Black Dog”のねじれたリフは、館をうろついていた黒い犬から名を得ている。“Stairway to Heaven”は穏やかな導入から段階的に熱を増し、大きな解放へ至る構成そのものが聴きどころで、最後までシングルとして切られることはなかった。“When the Levee Breaks”の巨大なドラムは、玄関ホールに立てたわずか2本のマイクが捉えたものだ。“Misty Mountain Hop”の弾む鍵盤から“Going to California”の静かな景色まで、収録曲は互いに似ていない。全米では2位に留まりながら、全世界で3,700万枚を売り上げ、70年代ロックの中心に立ち続けている一枚である。

Led Zeppelin IV is the fourth album, and it has no title. As if answering the cool reception of its predecessor, the band stripped every word from the sleeve and put up only four symbols, one chosen by each member. It was recorded between December 1970 and February 1971, mostly at Headley Grange, an old house in Hampshire, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, with Andy Johns engineering. Ian Stewart of the Stones plays piano on “Rock and Roll,” and Sandy Denny of Fairport Convention sings on “The Battle of Evermore” — the only guest vocalist on any Led Zeppelin album. The twisted riff of “Black Dog” took its name from a stray black dog wandering the grounds. “Stairway to Heaven” is compelling for its shape, a calm entrance gathering heat by stages toward a major release, and it was never released as a single. The enormous drums of “When the Levee Breaks” were captured by just two microphones set up in the entrance hall. From the bouncing keyboard of “Misty Mountain Hop” to the quiet scenery of “Going to California,” no two tracks resemble each other. It peaked at number 2 in the US, yet has sold 37 million copies worldwide and still stands at the centre of 1970s rock.
