Rock and Roll Over

『Rock and Roll Over』は、KISSが『Destroyer』の劇的な作り込みを経て、より直接的で身体的なロックンロールへ立ち返った第5作だ。太いギター、手拍子を誘うビート、ポール・スタンレーとジーン・シモンズの対照的な歌が、短い曲の中で次々にフックを作り出していく。 “I Want You”の勢い、“Calling Dr. Love”の遊び心、“Makin' Love”“Mr. Speed”のストレートな推進力まで、アルバムはKISSらしいキャラクターを気負わず並べていく。凝った演出を削ぎ落とし、バンドが一体となって鳴らす手触りが全編に生きている。 一方で、ピーター・クリスが歌う“Hard Luck Woman”のような哀感あるナンバーが、単調に陥らない振れ幅を作品へ与えている。“Take Me”“Ladies Room”のような曲でも、太いリフと直進するビートが一貫して作品を貫き、余計な装飾のない潔さが際立つ。黄金期のバンドが、演出よりもまず曲の力で勝負できることを証明した点に大きな意義がある。ライヴを想定した生々しい録音が、その手応えをさらに引き立てている。派手な仕掛けがなくても曲そのものが強いことを証明した本作は、黄金期の充実を示す一枚だ。ライヴ会場の熱気を、飾らないまま真空パックしたようなエネルギーが心地よい。

Rock and Roll Over finds KISS returning to more direct, physical rock and roll after the dramatic craft of Destroyer, on the band’s fifth album. Thick guitars, hand-clapping beats and the contrasting voices of Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons throw off hook after hook within short songs. From the drive of “I Want You” and the playfulness of “Calling Dr. Love” to the straight-ahead push of “Makin’ Love” and “Mr. Speed,” the album lines up KISS’s character without strain, stripping back elaborate staging so the feel of a band playing as one lives throughout. Meanwhile, a melancholy number like the Peter Criss–sung “Hard Luck Woman” gives the record a range that keeps it from turning monotonous. Proving the songs are strong even without flashy tricks, it is a fulfilling record of the golden period — its energy, vacuum-sealed straight from the heat of the live room, feels great.
