『Angel of Retribution』は、太いギター・リフ、鋭いツイン・リード、そしてロブ・ハルフォードの張り詰めた歌声を、真正面から力強く鳴らした再始動作だ。長年の看板ヴォーカリストであったハルフォードの復帰は、世界中のファンを歓喜させた。往年のヘヴィ・メタルらしい力強さを保ちながら、曲には確かな年輪を感じさせる、円熟した重みがある。 冒頭“Judas Rising”の劇的な復活宣言、“Revolution”のキャッチーな推進力、“Deal with the Devil”の攻撃性、そして“Angel”の美しいバラードまで、収録曲は幅広い表情を見せている。“Hellrider”のような疾走曲も、バンドの健在ぶりを力強く示している。速い曲の攻撃性と、大作のドラマ性が並び立つ構成が心地よい。 ハルフォードの復帰によって、クラシックなJUDAS PRIESTの核が、堂々たる現在形で完全に蘇った点に、本作の大きな意義がある。ブランクを全く感じさせない、力強く一体感のある演奏が全編にみなぎっている。“Worth Fighting For”“Wheels of Fire”のような曲でも、太いリフと張り詰めた歌声が結び付いている。黄金期のメンバーが再結集し、バンドの新たな章の幕開けを高らかに告げた、感動的で充実した復活作と言える。

Angel of Retribution is a restart that powerfully sounds thick guitar riffs, sharp twin leads and Rob Halford’s taut voice head-on. The return of Halford, the longtime flagship vocalist, delighted fans worldwide. Keeping the strength of heavy metal of old, the songs have a mature weight with sure rings of age. From the dramatic revival declaration of the opener “Judas Rising” and the catchy drive of “Revolution” to the aggression of “Deal with the Devil” and the beautiful ballad “Angel,” the songs show wide-ranging faces, while a dashing song like “Hellrider” powerfully shows the band’s vigor. A construction where the aggression of the fast songs and the drama of the epics stand side by side feels good. Its great significance lies in how, through Halford’s return, the core of classic Judas Priest fully revived in a dignified present tense. Powerful, unified playing that shows no gap at all fills the whole. Reuniting the golden-era members and loftily announcing a new chapter, it is a moving, fulfilling comeback record.
