Wide Awake (In My Dreamland)

『Wide Awake (In My Dreamland)』は、ジェフ・スコット・ソートが、AOR、メロディック・ロック、ハード・ロックにまたがる自らの経験を一枚に集約した第7作だ。2020年11月にフロンティアーズから発表され、本人は「ラッキー・セブン」と呼んで愛着を示している。豊かな声量と表情の多さはもちろん、曲ごとにフレーズの置き方を変え、メロディの感情を細かく伝えている。ファンが期待するものを踏まえつつ、そこへ現代的な音も足したと本人は語っている。 アレッサンドロ・デル・ヴェッキオとの共同制作による厚い鍵盤とギターは、歌を支えながら大きなサビを作る。ファブリツィオ・スガットーニのギターとエドゥ・コミナートのドラムが土台を固め、オーガスト・ザドラも“Between the Lines”でリード・ギターを弾いた。先行シングル“Love's Blind”から“Someone to Love”、表題曲まで流れが澄んでいる。CD盤には2019年のフロンティアーズ・ロック・フェスのライヴ音源も付いた。派手な技巧を見せるより、成熟した歌い手が良質なメロディをどう生かすかに焦点を当てた、聴き応えのある充実作である。

Wide Awake (In My Dreamland) is the seventh album, on which Jeff Scott Soto concentrated his experience across AOR, melodic rock and hard rock into one record. Released on Frontiers in November 2020; he calls it his “lucky number seven,” showing his attachment to it. Beyond the rich volume and variety of expression, he changes how phrases are placed song by song, conveying the melodies' emotion in fine detail. He has said they built on what fans expect of him while adding contemporary sounds. The dense keyboards and guitar from the co-production with Alessandro Del Vecchio support the vocals while building big choruses. Fabrizio Sgattoni's guitar and Edu Cominato's drums anchor the base, and August Zadra plays the lead on “Between the Lines.” From the advance single “Love's Blind” through “Someone to Love” to the title track, the flow is clear. CD versions also came with live material from the 2019 Frontiers Rock Festival. Rather than showing off flashy technique, it focuses on how a mature singer makes good melody work — a satisfying record.
