Retribution

『Retribution』は、JEFF SCOTT SOTOが持つソウルフルな歌唱力を、よりヘヴィでモダンなロックの文脈へ置いた第6作だ。2017年11月、フロンティアーズとの提携15周年を記念して発表された。長年の盟友ハウィー・サイモンと共作・共同プロデュースし、サイモンがギターとベースの大半を、エドゥ・コミナートがドラムを担当している。少人数で作られた分、音の焦点がはっきりしているのも特徴だ。ソート自身は歌と鍵盤で参加している。同年にはサンズ・オヴ・アポロも始動しており、極めて多忙のなかで生まれた一枚だった。 太いギター、低くうねるリズム、熱量の高いヴォーカルが重なり、曲は硬さだけでなく人間的な感情を持つ。メロディック・ロックの親しみやすさを残しつつ、サウンドには攻撃的な輪郭がある。表題曲から“Inside/Outside”の勢い、“Rage of the Year”の重さ、“Song for Joey”の私的な色合い、“Breakout”を経て締めの“Autumn”まで、キャリアの幅を感じさせながらも、焦点は常に歌の表現力にある。声の力で曲を前へ進めるフロントマンとしての魅力を、改めて確認できる一枚だ。

Retribution is the sixth album, placing Jeff Scott Soto's soulful vocal power in a heavier, more modern rock context. Released in November 2017 to mark 15 years of partnership with Frontiers. He co-wrote and co-produced it with longtime ally Howie Simon, who handles most of the guitar and bass, with Edu Cominato on drums. Made by a small team, its sonic focus is notably clear. Soto himself takes vocals and keyboards. Sons of Apollo also started up that year, so it came out of an extremely busy period. Thick guitar, low swelling rhythm and high-intensity vocals layer up, and the songs carry human emotion as well as hardness. Melodic rock's approachability remains, but the sound has an aggressive outline. From the title track through the drive of “Inside/Outside,” the weight of “Rage of the Year,” the personal color of “Song for Joey,” and “Breakout” to the closing “Autumn,” the record suggests his career's range while the focus stays always on vocal expression — a chance to confirm again his appeal as a frontman who moves songs forward on the strength of his voice.
