Lost in the Translation

『Lost in the Translation』は、ジェフ・スコット・ソートの伸びやかで表情豊かなヴォーカルを中心に、ハード・ロック、AOR、ソウルフルなニュアンスを行き来する第3作だ。2004年に発表され、ソート自身がベースとキーボードも弾き、ギターはハウィー・サイモンとゲイリー・シャットが分け合う。ドラムはグレン・ソベルが叩いた。ジャーニーのニール・ショーンも作曲と演奏で参加しており、この縁が同年に始まるソウル・サーカスへと繋がっていく。前作から2年、勢いに乗った時期の作品である。 曲はメロディを大切にしながら、ギターとリズムの硬さでロックとしての芯を保っている。冒頭の“Believe in Me”“Soul Divine”の疾走、最も重い“Drowning”、表題曲を経て、締めのアコースティックな“Sacred Eyes”まで、前作より一段とハードな手触りが際立つ。ベースから書かれた曲が多く、TALISMANを思わせる構造も随所にある。派手なハイトーンだけでなく、抑えた場面での歌の説得力も大きい。多彩な影響を自然にまとめ、シンガーとしての幅と楽曲への深い理解を示した、キャリア屈指の充実作である。

Lost in the Translation is the third album, moving between hard rock, AOR and soulful nuance around Jeff Scott Soto's soaring, expressive vocals. Released in 2004, with Soto himself also playing bass and keyboards and guitars split between Howie Simon and Gary Schutt. Glen Sobel plays drums. Journey's Neal Schon takes part in the writing and playing, a connection that led to Soul SirkUS, begun the same year. Two years on from the last record, it comes from a period of momentum. The songs value melody while keeping a rock core through the hardness of guitar and rhythm. From the race of the opener “Believe in Me” and “Soul Divine,” through the heaviest track “Drowning” and the title song, to the closing acoustic “Sacred Eyes,” a harder texture than the previous album stands out. Many songs were written on bass, and structures recalling Talisman appear throughout. Beyond flashy high notes, the persuasiveness of the singing in restrained passages is considerable. A satisfying career highlight that gathers varied influences naturally and shows both his range and his deep understanding of a song.
