Beautiful Mess

『Beautiful Mess』は、JEFF SCOTT SOTOがハード・ロックを軸にしながら、ソウルやファンクの手触りまで取り込んだ多彩な第4作だ。ジャーニー加入前に着手し、脱退後に完成させた作品で、2008年にまず配信で世に出たのち、2009年2月にフロンティアーズから発売された。スウェーデンのパウロ・メンドンサがプロデュースと共作の中心を担い、14曲中11曲に関わっている。ソート自身の作曲が半分に留まるのも、それまでのキャリアでは異例のことだった。演奏にはベン・キャリー(ギター)らが加わっている。 力強いハイトーンだけでなく、低域のニュアンスやリズムに寄り添う歌い回しにも魅力がある。冒頭の“21st Century”はギターで押しながらもR&B的な質感を持ち、“Cry Me a River”のポップさ、“Gin & Tonic Sky”“Our Song”“Testify”“Kick It”まで振れ幅は大きい。従来のAOR路線からは大きく踏み出しており、賛否も分かれた。それでもジャンルを横断して中心にあるのは歌の強さだ。軽やかな曲から熱いロック曲まで、表現力豊かなヴォーカリストの幅を楽しめる一枚になっている。

Beautiful Mess is the varied fourth album, taking in the touch of soul and funk while keeping hard rock at its axis. Begun before he joined Journey and completed after he left, it first appeared digitally in 2008 and then on Frontiers in February 2009. Sweden's Paulo Mendonça took the central role in production and co-writing, involved in 11 of the 14 songs; Soto's own writing accounting for only half was unusual for his career to that point. Ben Carey (guitar) and others take part in the playing. Beyond powerful high notes, the phrasing that hugs low-range nuance and rhythm has appeal too. The opener “21st Century” pushes with guitar yet carries an R&B texture, and the range is wide — the pop of “Cry Me a River,” “Gin & Tonic Sky,” “Our Song,” “Testify,” “Kick It.” It steps well away from the previous AOR path, and opinion was divided. Even so, across the genres what sits at the center is the strength of the singing. From light songs to hot rockers, a record for enjoying an expressive vocalist's range.
