Somewhere in Time

『Somewhere in Time』は、IRON MAIDENが疾走するリフと物語性を保ちながら、シンセサイズド・ギターによる新しい色彩を大胆に加えた第6作だ。スティーヴ・ハリスのベースは力強く曲を前へと運び、エイドリアン・スミスとデイヴ・マーレイのギターが、複雑で美しい線を幾重にも重ね合わせていく。SF的で洗練された音世界が、全編を覆っている。 冒頭“Caught Somewhere in Time”の疾走、切実なメロディが胸を打つ“Wasted Years”、浮遊感のある“Stranger in a Strange Land”、そして大作“Alexander the Great”の壮大な物語性まで、アルバムの幅広さをよく示している。“Heaven Can Wait”“The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner”のような曲も、その音の景色を豊かにしている。 シンセの導入という新しい試みを、MAIDENらしい強度を一切損なうことなく、見事に消化している点に、本作の意義がある。従来の疾走感に、より洗練された叙情性と、未来的な広がりが加わっている。バンドが表現の幅を大きく広げ、次なる傑作『Seventh Son』へとつながる道を切り開いた、充実した一枚と言える。

Somewhere in Time is the sixth album on which Iron Maiden, while keeping dashing riffs and narrative, boldly adds new color through synthesized guitars. Steve Harris’s bass powerfully carries the songs forward, and the guitars of Adrian Smith and Dave Murray layer intricate, beautiful lines many times over. A sci-fi, refined sound world covers the whole. From the speed of the opener “Caught Somewhere in Time” and “Wasted Years,” whose earnest melody strikes the heart, to the floating “Stranger in a Strange Land” and the grand narrative of the epic “Alexander the Great,” it well shows the album’s breadth, while cuts like “Heaven Can Wait” and “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner” enrich its soundscape. Its significance lies in how it beautifully digests the new experiment of introducing synths without impairing Maiden’s strength at all. To the former speed are added a more refined lyricism and a futuristic expanse. Greatly widening the band’s expression and opening a path to the next masterpiece Seventh Son, it is a fulfilling record.
