Brave New World

『Brave New World』は、ブルース・ディッキンソンと、エイドリアン・スミスの二人が同時に復帰し、IRON MAIDENが新たな章を開いた、記念すべき再始動作だ。マーレイ、スミス、ガーズという3本のギターが織りなす厚いハーモニーと、ディッキンソンの力強い歌が、バンドの景色を一変させている。往年の輝きが、完全に蘇った一枚である。 冒頭シングル“The Wicker Man”の力強い推進力、“Ghost of the Navigator”の劇的な展開、壮大な表題曲“Brave New World”、そして名バラード的な“Blood Brothers”まで、収録曲はいずれも高い完成度を誇る。長尺曲でもメロディを途切れさせることなく、壮大な物語性を最後まで保っている。“Out of the Silent Planet”のようなキャッチーな曲も光る。 往年の魅力を単に再現するだけでなく、より成熟した円熟の演奏で、バンドの次の時代を高らかに提示した点に、本作の大きな意義がある。3本のギターがもたらす音の厚みは、後期MAIDENの大きな武器となった。単なる復帰作にとどまらず、その後の黄金期の基準点となった、力強く感動的な傑作と言える。

Brave New World is a memorable restart on which both Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith return at once and Iron Maiden opens a new chapter. The thick harmony woven by three guitars — Murray, Smith and Gers — and Dickinson’s powerful singing transform the band’s landscape. The radiance of old is fully revived. From the powerful drive of the opening single “The Wicker Man” and the dramatic development of “Ghost of the Navigator” to the grand title track “Brave New World” and the fine ballad-like “Blood Brothers,” every song boasts high polish. Even in long pieces, it keeps the grand narrative to the end without breaking the melody, while a catchy song like “Out of the Silent Planet” also shines. Its great significance lies in not merely reproducing the appeal of old but loftily presenting the band’s next era with more mature playing. The sonic thickness three guitars bring became a great weapon of late Maiden. Not stopping at a mere comeback, becoming a reference point for the golden era that followed, it is a powerful, moving masterpiece.
