Lunar Strain

『Lunar Strain』は、IN FLAMESが、デス・メタルの、あの鋭い攻撃性へと、北欧民謡的な、美しい旋律と、アコースティックな、繊細な陰影とを重ね合わせ、後の、あのメロディック・デス・メタルの、確かな輪郭を、早くも描いてみせた、鮮烈なデビュー作だ。この時期のヴォーカルは、後にダーク・トランキュリティで知られる、ミカエル・スタンネが担当している。まだ荒削りながらも、そこには、すでに、バンド独自の、確かな音楽的個性が、はっきりと宿っている。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する名曲“Behind Space”の力強さ、そして表題曲“Lunar Strain”のドラマ性、さらに“Starforsaken”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Dreamscape”、そして、伝統的な民謡をカヴァーした“Hårgalåten”のような曲も、作品の独自性を伝えている。荒いリフの間から、ふと現れる、美しく叙情的なフレーズが、単なる暴力性とは、全く異なる、冷たく美しい叙情を生み出している。 激しいパートと、静かなアコースティック・ギターとの、その繊細な接続にも、若いバンドならではの、粗削りで、力強い熱量が、しっかりと残されている一枚だ。イエテボリ・シーンから登場した、この新たな才能は、後に、ジャンルそのものを代表するバンドへと、大きく成長していく。メロディック・デス・メタルの、その黎明期を告げる、力強く意欲的な名デビュー作と言える。バンドの原点がここにある。

Lunar Strain is a vivid debut on which In Flames, layering beautiful folk-like melody and delicate acoustic shading onto death metal’s sharp aggression, early drew the sure outline of the later melodic death metal. The vocals in this period were handled by Mikael Stanne, later known from Dark Tranquillity. Still rough, it already clearly holds the band’s own sure musical character. From the power of the speeding opening classic “Behind Space” and the drama of the title track “Lunar Strain” to a cut like “Starforsaken,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Dreamscape” and “Hårgalåten,” covering a traditional folk song, convey the work’s originality. Beautiful, lyrical phrases that suddenly appear from between the rough riffs create a cold, beautiful lyricism wholly different from mere violence. A record in which a rough, powerful heat particular to a young band is firmly kept even in the delicate connection between fierce parts and quiet acoustic guitar. This new talent, emerging from the Gothenburg scene, would later grow into a band representing the genre itself.
