The Time of the Oath

『The Time of the Oath』は、疾走するリフ、明るく伸びるメロディ、重厚なコーラスを通して、HELLOWEENのパワー・メタルを再び大きく鳴らした第7作だ。ノストラダムスの予言を題材にしたテーマ性を持ちながらも、曲は一曲ごとに強い推進力を備えている。デリス期初期を代表する、充実した一枚である。 代表曲“Power”の力強い推進力、美しいバラード“Forever and One (Neverland)”の叙情、冒頭“We Burn”の疾走、そして表題曲“The Time of the Oath”の壮大さまで、収録曲はスピードと哀感、そして前向きな高揚を見事に結び付けている。“Kings Will Be Kings”のような曲も、アルバムに厚みを加えている。 アンディ・デリスの声は前作以上にバンドの中へ自然に溶け込み、エピックな場面にも確かな人間味を与えている。前作『Master of the Rings』で確立した路線を、さらに洗練させ、深化させた点が本作の魅力だ。“Steel Tormentor”“Mission Motherland”のような曲でも、疾走するリフと壮大なコーラスが結び付き、作品に一貫した高揚を与えている。速さと叙情性を高い次元で両立させた、デリス期の重要な代表作と言える。

The Time of the Oath is the seventh album on which Helloween again sounds its power metal greatly through dashing riffs, bright soaring melody and heavy choruses. Carrying a theme based on the prophecies of Nostradamus, the songs hold a strong drive one by one. It is a fulfilling record representative of the early Deris era. From the powerful drive of the signature “Power” and the lyricism of the beautiful ballad “Forever and One (Neverland)” to the speed of the opener “We Burn” and the grandeur of the title track “The Time of the Oath,” the songs beautifully bind speed, melancholy and positive lift, while a cut like “Kings Will Be Kings” adds thickness. Andi Deris’s voice melts into the band more naturally than on the previous album, giving sure humanity even to the epic passages. Its appeal is that it further refines and deepens the direction established on Master of the Rings. Uniting speed and lyricism at a high level, it is an important, representative record of the Deris era.
