『Use Your Illusion I』は、同日発売の続編と対をなす、GUNS N' ROSESの野心が一気に膨張した第3作だ。アドラーに代わってマット・ソーラム(ドラム)が加わり、ディジー・リード(キーボード)も正式に参加。アクセル・ローズ、スラッシュ、イジー・ストラドリン、ダフ・マッケイガンに二人を加えた布陣で、バンド自身とマイク・クリンクが共同プロデュースした。デビュー作の危険な勢いを残しながら、曲の長さ、編成、感情の幅を大きく広げている。 “Right Next Door to Hell”の加速感と、9分に及ぶ“November Rain”の壮大なドラマが同じ一枚に並ぶこと自体が、この時期のスケールを物語る。ポール・マッカートニーの“Live and Let Die”のカヴァー、イジーが歌う“Dust N' Bones”、アリス・クーパーが客演する“The Garden”、10分を超える閉幕曲“Coma”まで、振れ幅は極めて大きい。“Don't Cry”と“November Rain”はミュージック・ビデオでも大きな話題を呼んだ。二枚同時発売の本作と続編は全米チャートで2位と1位を占め、一組が同時にトップ2を独占する史上初の快挙となった。過剰さを恐れず、ロックの器を押し広げた一枚である。

Use Your Illusion I is the third album, paired with its same-day sequel, on which the ambition of Guns N' Roses swelled all at once. Matt Sorum (drums) joined in place of Adler and Dizzy Reed (keyboards) became a full member; with Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan plus the two, the band co-produced with Mike Clink. It keeps the dangerous charge of the debut while greatly widening song length, arrangement and emotional range. That the rush of “Right Next Door to Hell” and the grand nine-minute drama of “November Rain” sit on one record says much about the scale of this period. From the cover of Paul McCartney's “Live and Let Die” to Izzy's lead vocal on “Dust N' Bones” and the over-ten-minute closer “Coma,” the swing is vast. Released together, this album and its sequel took the top two spots on the US chart, the first time one act held both at once. It is a record that refuses to fear excess and pushes the frame of rock outward.
