『G N' R Lies』は、爆発的なデビュー作に続き、GUNS N' ROSESが荒々しい初期衝動とアコースティックの陰影を一枚に同居させた作品だ。前半4曲は1986年のEP『Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide』からの再録で、疾走する“Reckless Life”、ローズ・タトゥーの“Nice Boys”、エアロスミスの“Mama Kin”のカヴァーを含む生々しいライヴ感が貫く。後半4曲は新たに録音されたアコースティック主体の楽曲で、バンドのもう一つの表情を示す。マイク・クリンクが再びプロデュースを手がけた。 静かに爪弾かれる“Patience”は口笛から始まる名バラードとして全米シングル・チャートで4位を記録し、リフで押し切るだけではないソングライティングの幅を証明した。皮肉なユーモアを効かせた“Used to Love Her”も印象深い。一方で“One in a Million”は差別的な歌詞をめぐって大きな論争を呼び、バンドの危うさも露わにしている。前半の粗い勢いと後半の距離の近い歌の落差が、初期GUNS N' ROSESの振れ幅をそのまま刻んだ。短い作品ながら、感情の濃さと予測不能さを鮮やかに残した一枚である。

G N' R Lies follows the explosive debut by placing Guns N' Roses' raw early charge beside acoustic shading on a single record. The first four tracks are re-recordings from the 1986 EP Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, carrying a live rawness that includes covers of Rose Tattoo's “Nice Boys” and Aerosmith's “Mama Kin.” The latter four are newly recorded, largely acoustic songs that reveal another side of the band. Mike Clink again produced. The quietly picked “Patience,” a fine ballad opening with whistling, reached number four on the US singles chart and proved a songwriting range that does more than win through riffs. Meanwhile “One in a Million” drew heavy controversy over its discriminatory lyrics, exposing the band's danger as well. The gap between the rough first half and the intimate second half captures the range of early Guns N' Roses. Though brief, it leaves a vivid picture of emotional intensity and unpredictability.
