『Chinese Democracy』は、構想から完成まで15年近くを要した、GUNS N' ROSESの第6作にして最新スタジオ作だ。オリジナル・メンバーはアクセル・ローズただ一人となり、ロビン・フィンク、バケットヘッド、バンブルフット、リチャード・フォータス、トミー・スティンソン、ディジー・リードら流動的な布陣が制作に加わった。莫大な費用と長い難産を経て、従来のストリート感あるロックンロールとは大きく異なる、緻密で重層的な音像を描いている。 中国で発禁となった表題曲“Chinese Democracy”の攻撃的な疾走、フレディ・マーキュリーを思わせるバラード“Street of Dreams”、じわりと熱を上げる“Better”は、いずれもシングルとなった。“There Was a Time”のドラマ、じっくり沈む“I.R.S.”、マーティン・ルーサー・キングの引用を織り込んだ“Madagascar”まで、曲ごとに異なる緊張とスケールを作り出す。米国では大手量販店ベスト・バイの独占販売という形をとり、本作は全米ビルボード200で初登場3位を記録した。賛否は大きく分かれたが、過去の焼き直しを断固として拒み、アクセルの理想を極限まで追い込んだ野心的な一枚である。

Chinese Democracy is the sixth and most recent studio album by Guns N' Roses, which took nearly fifteen years from conception to completion. Axl Rose became the only original member remaining, joined in production by a fluid cast including Robin Finck, Buckethead, Bumblefoot, Richard Fortus, Tommy Stinson and Dizzy Reed. After enormous cost and a long, difficult birth, it paints a dense, many-layered sound far removed from the band's earlier street-level rock and roll. The aggressive drive of the title track “Chinese Democracy,” banned in China, the Freddie Mercury-recalling ballad “Street of Dreams” and the slowly heating “Better” all became singles. From the drama of “There Was a Time” to “Madagascar,” which weaves in quotations from Martin Luther King, each song builds a different tension and scale. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200. Opinion split sharply, but by firmly refusing to repeat the past and pushing Axl's ideal to the limit, it stands as an ambitious record.
