『Open』は、GOTTHARDが、太いギター・リフと、歌心あふれる美しいメロディを組み合わせ、スケールの大きなハード・ロックを鳴らした作品だ。タイトルが示す通り、より開かれた、幅広い音楽性へと踏み出しており、ヘヴィな楽曲でも、そのコーラスは、実に開放的だ。バラードでは、スティーヴ・リーのヴォーカルの、豊かな表情が、丁寧に引き出されている。90年代末の、円熟したバンドの姿を映した一枚である。 冒頭“Free and Alive”の力強い推進力、“Vision”のドラマ性、そして叙情的な“Let It Rain”まで、収録曲は、楽曲ごとの色合いこそ多彩だが、演奏の、まっすぐで確かな熱と、メロディの強さとが、作品全体を、しっかりとつないでいる。“You”“Got to Be Love”のような曲も、作品の魅力を高めている。バンドの、幅広い表現力が発揮されている。 大衆的な親しみやすさと、ハード・ロックとしての確かな芯とを、極めて高い次元で両立させている点が本作の魅力だ。より洗練されたポップ感覚をも、巧みに溶け込ませている。スティーヴ・リーの、円熟した歌声と、レオ・レオーニのギターとの、確かな相性が全編に光る。GOTTHARDの、メロディの幅広さと、その深化を示した、充実したメロディック・ハード・ロック作品と言える。

Open is a work on which Gotthard, combining thick guitar riffs and songcraft-filled beautiful melody, sounds large-scale hard rock. As the title suggests, it steps into a more open, wide musicality, and even in heavy songs the choruses are truly open. In ballads, the rich expression of Steve Lee’s vocals is carefully drawn out. A record reflecting the mature band at the end of the 1990s. From the powerful drive of the opener “Free and Alive” and the drama of “Vision” to the lyrical “Let It Rain,” the songs vary in hue yet the straight, sure heat of the playing and the strength of the melody firmly connect the whole work, while cuts like “You” and “Got to Be Love” heighten the work’s appeal. The band’s wide expression is displayed. Its appeal is uniting popular accessibility and a sure hard-rock core at an extremely high level. It also deftly melts in a more refined pop sense. The sure chemistry of Steve Lee’s mature voice and Leo Leoni’s guitar shines throughout. Showing the breadth and deepening of Gotthard’s melody, it is a fulfilling melodic-hard-rock work.
