Lighting Up the Sky is the eighth album, balancing sturdy riffs with melody and concentrating the band's strengths. The band has spoken of it as potentially its final studio album. Production was again handled by Mudrock, who made the debut, together with Sully Erna, and the mixing was done by Dave Fortman, who worked on recent records. A theme that looks back over the journey of a long career runs throughout. The lead single "Surrender" became a signature song with its powerful riff and chorus, and "You and I" and "Soul on Fire" push melody and emotion to the front. Lyrics about life, relationships and what we leave behind carry a weight fitting for a conclusion. Songs balancing firmness and songcraft feel as if they concentrate the path from the early days onto one record. For longtime fans too, it resonates deeply as the band's summation.
