『The Flag of Punishment』は、GALNERYUSが、ネオクラシカルで華麗なギター、高速のリズム、そして伸びやかなハイトーン・ヴォーカルを組み合わせ、鮮烈なパワー・メタルを鳴らした、記念すべきデビュー作だ。ギタリストのSyuが中心となって結成された本作は、初代ヴォーカリスト、YAMA-B(山田雅樹)を擁し、その卓越した演奏力で、日本のメロディック・メタル・シーンに、鮮烈な光を当てた一枚である。楽曲は、あくまで技巧的に疾走しながらも、そのサビには、明快なメロディと、勇壮な高揚感とが、しっかりと備わっている。 冒頭のインストゥルメンタルから、疾走する“Struggle for the Freedom Flag”へと至る展開、そして“Beyond of the Ground”のドラマ性、さらに“In the Delight”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Rebel Flag”、そして“Meditation for the Saga”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。Syuの、ネオクラシカルで超絶的なギターが、全編で力強く冴え渡っている。 演奏の、その華やかさと、楽曲の、確かな勢いとが、極めて自然に噛み合い、バンドとしての、あの独自の個性は、最初から、すでに明確である一枚だ。イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンらの影響を、色濃く感じさせつつも、日本ならではの、叙情的なメロディ・センスが光っている。日本のメロディック・パワー・メタルに、新鮮な光を当てた、力強く意欲的な名デビュー作と言える。バンドの原点がここにある。

The Flag of Punishment is a memorable debut on which Galneryus, combining neoclassical, gorgeous guitar, high-speed rhythm and soaring high-range vocals, sounded vivid power metal. Formed with the guitarist Syu at the center, this work, featuring the first vocalist Yama-B (Masaki Yamada), cast a vivid light on Japan’s melodic-metal scene with its outstanding playing. The songs, while speeding technically, firmly hold clear melody and valiant lift in their choruses. From the development from the opening instrumental to the speeding “Struggle for the Freedom Flag” and the drama of “Beyond of the Ground” to a cut like “In the Delight,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Rebel Flag” and “Meditation for the Saga” convey the work’s fullness. Syu’s neoclassical, virtuosic guitar is powerfully in sharp form throughout. A record on which the splendor of the playing and the sure momentum of the songs mesh extremely naturally, and its own character as a band is already clear from the start. While strongly evoking influences such as Yngwie Malmsteen, a lyrical melodic sense particular to Japan shines.
