『Between Heaven and Hell』は、FIREWINDが鋭いギター・リフ、速いドラム、伸びやかなヴォーカルで、正統派パワー・メタルを勢いよく鳴らした初期作だ。曲は若々しいが、メロディの組み立てにはすでに確かなセンスがある。ギタリストのガス・Gを中心とする、ギリシャ出身のバンドの鮮烈なデビュー作である。 “Between Heaven and Hell”“Warrior”“Destination Forever”といった楽曲では、技巧的なギターと覚えやすいコーラスの組み合わせが、アルバムを前へ進めている。当時のヴォーカリスト、スティーヴン・フレドリックの伸びやかな歌声も印象的だ。スコーピオンズの“Pictured Life”のカヴァーも収録されている。“World of Conflict”“I Will Fight Alone”のような楽曲にも、初期らしい瑞々しい魅力が息づいている。本作でギタリストとしての類まれな才能を示したガス・Gは後にヨーロッパを代表するギター・ヒーローの一人となり、“Oceans”“Firewind Raging”のような楽曲にも初期らしい瑞々しい魅力が息づいている。FIREWINDの原点にある熱量と疾走感を知るための、重要な一枚だ。

Between Heaven and Hell is an early work on which FIREWIND energetically sounded orthodox power metal with sharp guitar riffs, fast drums and soaring vocals. The songs are youthful, but there is already a sure sense in the construction of the melody. Centered on guitarist Gus G., it is the vivid debut of the band from Greece. On “Between Heaven and Hell,” “Warrior” and “Destination Forever,” the combination of technical guitar and memorable choruses advances the album. The soaring voice of then-vocalist Stephen Fredrick is also impressive. A cover of the Scorpions’ “Pictured Life” is also included. Songs like “World of Conflict” and “I Will Fight Alone” breathe an early, fresh appeal too. It is an important record for knowing the heat and drive at FIREWIND’s origin.
