Awaken the Guardian

『Awaken the Guardian』は、FATES WARNINGが伝統的ヘヴィ・メタルの力強さに、複雑な曲構成と幻想的な空気を重ね合わせた、ジョン・アーチ在籍期を代表する名作だ。アーチの独特な高音と、ジム・マテオス、フランク・アレスティのギターが、曲を常に予測しにくい方向へと導いていく。ファンタジックな歌詞世界と、目まぐるしく展開する構成が、初期プログレッシヴ・メタルの一つの到達点を築いている。1980年代半ばのアメリカン・メタルの中でも、これほど幻想的で複雑な作品は稀であり、アーチの唯一無二のヴォーカルは本作でその表現の頂点に達している。 “The Sorceress”“Valley of the Dolls”“Guardian”“Fata Morgana”といった楽曲では、重いリフと繊細な展開が緊密に交差し、劇的な緊張と解放が幾度も繰り返される。“Prelude to Ruin”“Exodus”のような楽曲にも、構築美と幻想性が息づいている。本作を最後にアーチはバンドを離れることになるが、その独創的なヴォーカルと複雑な作曲は、後続のプログレッシヴ・メタル勢に大きな示唆を与えた。1986年のシーンの中でも際立った輪郭を保つ、探究心の強い一枚である。

Awaken the Guardian is a masterpiece representative of the John Arch period, on which FATES WARNING layered complex song construction and a fantastical air atop traditional heavy-metal strength. Arch’s distinctive high notes and the guitars of Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti always lead the songs in hard-to-predict directions. A fantasy-laden lyrical world and dizzyingly unfolding construction build one culmination of early progressive metal. On “The Sorceress,” “Valley of the Dolls,” “Guardian” and “Fata Morgana,” heavy riffs and delicate development intersect tightly, with dramatic tension and release repeated again and again. Songs like “Prelude to Ruin” and “Exodus” breathe constructive beauty and fantasy too. Arch would leave the band after this record, but his original vocals and complex writing gave great impetus to the progressive-metal bands that followed. Keeping a distinct outline even within the 1986 scene, it is a strongly inquisitive record.
