Fair Warning

『Fair Warning』は、トミー・ハートの情感豊かな歌とヘルゲ・エンゲルケの艶やかなギターを軸に、力強さと繊細さを両立させたデビュー作だ。ジーノ・ロート率いるZENOの人脈から生まれたバンドで、元V2のハート、元ZENOのウレ・W・リトゲン(ベース)に、エンゲルケ、アンディ・マレツェク(ギター)、C.C.ベーレンス(ドラム)が加わる。1992年にWEAから発表され、ジャイアントやテンを手がけたレイフ・マッケンナがプロデュースした。グランジ台頭の逆風のなかでの登場だった。 大きく開くサビだけでなく、曲の合間を彩るアコースティックな響きやリード・フレーズにも丁寧な手触りがある。“Longing for Love”“Out on the Run”“One Step Closer”は今も代表曲で、ZENO時代の未発表曲“The Heat of Emotion”“The Call of the Heart”も収められた。ハード・ロックの推進力を保ちながら、歌を最優先に置く姿勢がアルバム全体を貫く。日本では『BURRN!』誌の新人賞に選ばれ、90年代のヨーロピアン・メロディック・ロックを語るうえで欠かせない、温かく完成度の高い一枚となった。

Fair Warning is the debut balancing power and delicacy around Tommy Heart's emotive singing and Helge Engelke's lustrous guitar. The band grew out of the circle around Zeno, the group led by Zeno Roth: ex-V2 singer Heart and ex-Zeno bassist Ule W. Ritgen were joined by Engelke, Andy Malecek (guitar) and C.C. Behrens (drums). Released on WEA in 1992 and produced by Rafe McKenna, known for Giant and Ten. It arrived into the headwind of grunge's rise. Beyond the wide-open choruses, the acoustic textures and lead phrases that color the spaces between have a careful touch. “Longing for Love,” “Out on the Run” and “One Step Closer” remain signature songs, and two unreleased Zeno-era tracks, “The Heat of Emotion” and “The Call of the Heart,” are included. A stance that puts the singing first while keeping hard rock's drive runs through the whole album. In Japan it won BURRN! magazine's newcomer award — a warm, highly accomplished record that is indispensable when discussing 1990s European melodic rock.
