The Truth and a Little More

『The Truth and a Little More』は、1999年にストックホルムで結成されたスウェーデンのハード・ロック・バンド、ECLIPSEのデビュー作だ。中心人物は、以後シーン屈指のソングライター/プロデューサーへと成長するエリック・マーテンソン（ヴォーカル/ギター/ベース）。ギターのマグヌス・ヘンリクソンと共に、英国のZ Recordsからこの一枚を放った。鋭いギターと洗練されたコーラスを掲げ、スウェーデン産メロディック・ハードの新世代を予感させる、荒削りながら確かな出発点である。 “Midnight Train”“The Truth”のドラマティックな展開、“Message of Love”のメロディックな高揚まで、80年代ハード・ロックへの敬意と現代的な感覚が同居している。本作にはEUROPEのギタリスト、キー・マルセロや、イングヴェイ・マルムスティーンの盟友である鍵盤奏者マッツ・オラウソンらがゲスト参加し、楽曲に厚みを添えている。マーテンソン自身の初プロデュース作でもあり、後に確立される巨大なフックの萌芽がすでに随所に聴き取れる。バンドの長い旅路の始まりを刻んだ、意義深い一枚だ。

The Truth and a Little More is the debut by Eclipse, the Swedish hard rock band formed in Stockholm in 1999. Its central figure is Erik Mårtensson (vocals, guitar, bass), who would grow into one of the scene's foremost songwriters and producers. Together with guitarist Magnus Henriksson, he released this record through England's Z Records. Raising sharp guitars and polished choruses, it is a rough but firm starting point that hints at a new generation of Swedish melodic hard rock. From the dramatic development of "Midnight Train" and "The Truth" to the melodic lift of "Message of Love," respect for 1980s hard rock coexists with a modern sensibility. Guests including Europe guitarist Kee Marcello and keyboardist Mats Olausson — Yngwie Malmsteen's longtime collaborator — add depth to the songs. Also Mårtensson's first production, it already reveals throughout the buds of the huge hooks he would later perfect. It is a meaningful record marking the beginning of the band's long journey.
