Megalomanium

『Megalomanium』は、ECLIPSEが持ち味の巨大なフックに、パワー・ポップやパンク的な瑞々しさを大胆に取り込んだ第9作だ。約38分という引き締まった構成の中に、無駄を削ぎ落とした即効性の高いロック・ナンバーを凝縮している。スウェーデンのシリヤン湖に浮かぶ島のスタジオで録音された本作は、バンドのDNAを余すところなく詰め込んだ、勢いあふれる一枚である。ジャケットの題名にはローマ数字の「I」が隠されており、これは同時期に制作された続編『Megalomanium II』の存在を示唆するものだった。 先行シングル“The Hardest Part Is Losing You”は、ソウルフルな歌心と力強いリフを兼ね備えた、バンド屈指のアンセムだ。ケルティックな叙情を湛えた“Anthem”、DIOやSABBATHを思わせる重厚な“Children of the Night”、キャッチーな“Hearts Collide”まで、多彩な楽曲が並ぶ。“High Road”ではベースのヴィクトル・クルスナーが初めてリード・ヴォーカルを務めた。エリック・マーテンソンの卓越したソングライティングが、円熟と若々しさを高い次元で両立させた快作である。

Megalomanium is Eclipse's ninth album, on which the band boldly took power-pop and punk freshness into their signature huge hooks. Within a tight roughly-38-minute shape, it concentrates immediate rock numbers stripped of any waste. Recorded at a studio on an island in Sweden's Lake Siljan, it is a record packed full of the band's DNA and bursting with momentum. The cover hides the Roman numeral "I" in its title, hinting at the existence of the companion Megalomanium II, made at the same time. The lead single "The Hardest Part Is Losing You," combining soulful melody with a powerful riff, is one of the band's finest anthems. From the Celtic-lyrical "Anthem" and the weighty "Children of the Night," recalling Dio and Sabbath, to the catchy "Hearts Collide," varied songs line up. On "High Road," bassist Victor Crusner takes lead vocals for the first time. It is a gem on which Erik Mårtensson's outstanding songwriting balances maturity and youthful energy at a high level.
