『Train of Thought』は、DREAM THEATERが、低く重いギター、精密なリズム、そしてテクニカルなキーボードを駆使し、従来よりも、はるかに硬く、そして暗いプログレッシヴ・メタルを作り上げた、充実の第7作だ。前作の、あの多彩さから一転し、そのヘヴィな側面を、極限まで前面に押し出している。長い楽曲であっても、その緊張は、決して途切れることなく、各パートの、卓越した技巧が、その攻撃性を、いっそう力強く押し上げていく。バンドの、最もヘヴィな一枚である。 冒頭を飾る、疾走する人気曲“As I Am”の力強さ、そして、組曲的な“This Dying Soul”、さらに“Endless Sacrifice”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。“Honor Thy Father”、そして、24分を超える壮大な大作“In the Name of God”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。インストゥルメンタル“Stream of Consciousness”では、その超絶技巧が、全開となっている。 その圧倒的な複雑さの中にも、しっかりと歌えるメロディが残されており、決して、演奏の凄まじさだけで終わることがない一枚だ。メタルとしての、確かな重量感と、プログレッシヴな知性とが、極めて高い次元で両立している。バンドの、そのヘヴィな側面を、強く印象的に刻んだ、力強く聴き応えのある傑作と言える。バンドの攻撃性が光る一枚だ。

Train of Thought is a fulfilling seventh album on which Dream Theater, using low, heavy guitar, precise rhythm and technical keyboards, built a far harder, darker progressive metal than before. Turning from the previous work’s variety, it foregrounds its heavy side to the limit. Even in long songs, the tension never breaks, and each part’s outstanding technique pushes up its aggression all the more powerfully. The band’s heaviest record. From the power of the speeding popular opener “As I Am” and the suite-like “This Dying Soul” to a cut like “Endless Sacrifice,” every song is engaging, while cuts like “Honor Thy Father” and the over-24-minute grand epic “In the Name of God” convey the work’s fullness. On the instrumental “Stream of Consciousness,” its virtuosity is in full bloom. A record on which, even within its overwhelming complexity, singable melody is firmly kept, by no means ending as mere ferocity of playing. Metal’s sure weight and progressive intelligence are united at an extremely high level. A powerful, engaging masterpiece that strongly and strikingly inscribed the band’s heavy side — a record where the band’s aggression shines.
