Silent Night Fever

『Silent Night Fever』は、イン・フレイムスのイェスパー・ストロムブラードと、同バンドの元ギタリスト、グレン・リュングストレームが1995年に余技として始めたバンドが、7年をかけて辿り着いた初のフル・アルバムだ。歌うのは元マルドゥクのドラマー、ヨアキム・“ヨッケ”・ゴートベリ。ドラムはリアーズ・イン・ウェイトやディアボリークを経たハンス・ニルソンである。1998年に一度解散した四人は2000年に再び集まり、2001年秋にフラット・プラネットで本作を録音した。発売は2002年5月、リゲインとセンチュリー・メディアの共同だった。 題名はジョン・トラボルタの『サタデー・ナイト・フィーバー』をもじったものだ。だが中身に冗談はない。全9曲で約30分、4分半を超える曲は一つもない。“Silent Night Fever”の一撃、“The Murder-Inn”の刻み、“Through the Virgin Sky”の疾走まで、ギター二本は絶えず前へ突き、ニルソンのドラムは機関銃のように鳴る。ゴートベリの咆哮には黒い金属の残り香がある。90年代初頭のイェーテボリを、2000年代に入って敢えて鳴らし直した一枚。異形の“Slow Silence”が幕を閉じる。

Silent Night Fever is the first full album from a band that Jesper Strömblad of In Flames and Glenn Ljungström, a former guitarist in the same band, started as a side project in 1995 — and it took them seven years to reach it. The singer is Joakim “Jocke” Göthberg, formerly Marduk's drummer; the drummer is Hans Nilsson, previously of Liers in Wait and Diabolique. The four split in 1998, regrouped in 2000, and cut this at Phlat Planet in autumn 2001. Regain and Century Media issued it jointly in May 2002. The title puns on John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever. There is no joke in the music. Nine tracks run about thirty minutes and not one passes four and a half. From the strike of “Silent Night Fever” through the chop of “The Murder-Inn” to the sprint of “Through the Virgin Sky,” the two guitars drive constantly forward while Nilsson's drums fire like a machine gun. Göthberg's roar still carries the residue of black metal. This is early-1990s Gothenburg deliberately played again in the 2000s, closing on the strange “Slow Silence.”
