『PowerNerd』は、デヴィン・タウンゼンドの多層的な世界観を保ちながらも、より短く、直接的な曲の力へと重心を移した作品だ。巨大な音の壁、ユーモア、内省、そしてカタルシスといった彼らしい要素はあるが、ここでは複雑さそのものよりも、感情を一気に届ける推進力が前面に出ている。 表題曲“PowerNerd”の勢い、“Falling Apart”の疾走、“Knuckledragger”の攻撃性、そして“Gratitude”“Dreams of Light”の伸びやかなメロディまで、収録曲はいずれも明快なフックを備えている。重厚なギターと広がるコーラスが、個人的な迷いから抜け出すためのエネルギーを生み出しており、細部を追えばアレンジの工夫も豊富だ。 しかし、聴いて最初に強く残るのは、何よりも「前へ進む」という力強い感覚である。大掛かりな実験に頼らず、曲そのものの推進力とメロディで勝負した点が、本作の魅力だ。“Ubelia”“Younger Lover”のような曲でも、重厚なギターとキャッチーなメロディが結び付き、作品に一貫した推進力を与えている。近年の彼の作品の中でも、特にストレートで力強い一枚だ。壮大さを保ちながらも親しみやすく、入門者にも深掘りするファンにも応える、バランスの取れた充実作と言える。

PowerNerd is a record on which Devin Townsend, while keeping his layered world, shifts the balance toward shorter, more direct song power. His signature elements — the huge wall of sound, humor, introspection and catharsis — are present, but here a drive that delivers emotion all at once comes to the fore rather than complexity itself. From the momentum of the title track “PowerNerd” and the speed of “Falling Apart” to the aggression of “Knuckledragger” and the soaring melody of “Gratitude” and “Dreams of Light,” every song carries a clear hook. Heavy guitar and expansive choruses create energy for breaking out of personal doubt, and following the details reveals plenty of arranging craft. Yet what stays strongest on first listen is, above all, a powerful sense of moving forward. Its appeal is that it wins on the drive and melody of the songs themselves rather than large-scale experiment. Grand yet approachable, answering both newcomers and deep-diving fans, it is a well-balanced, fulfilling record.
