Infinity

『Infinity』は、デヴィン・タウンゼンドが厚く積み重ねたギター、予測不能な展開、壊れそうなほど繊細なメロディを結びつけた作品だ。重い音の壁の中にも、ユーモア、不安、そして静かな美しさが同居し、混沌とした音像の奥に確かな感情の芯が通っている。 冒頭“Truth”の壮大さ、“Christeen”の親しみやすいメロディ、“Bad Devil”の奇妙な高揚、そして“War”“Wild Colonial Boy”の勢いまで、収録曲はめまぐるしく表情を変えていく。ブロードウェイ的なスケール感すら漂う大仰さと、ロックの即効性が、独特のバランスで同居しているのが面白い。 聴くたびに別の細部が現れるほど、アレンジは密度が高い。それでも感情の軸は一貫して明確で、混沌をただの混乱では終わらせていない。過剰さと繊細さを同じ画面に詰め込む、デヴィン・タウンゼンドらしい発想が全開になった一枚だ。“Soul Driven Cadillac”“Noisy Pink Bubbles”のような曲でも、過剰な音の層と繊細なメロディが同居し、作品に唯一無二の彩りを与えている。何が飛び出すか分からない予測不能さこそが、本作の尽きせぬ魅力だ。初期の代表作の一つに数えられる、濃密で個性的な作品と言える。

Infinity is a record on which Devin Townsend binds thickly stacked guitar, unpredictable development and melody delicate enough to break. Within the heavy wall of sound, humor, unease and a quiet beauty coexist, and a sure emotional core runs beneath the chaotic sonic picture. From the grandeur of the opener “Truth” and the approachable melody of “Christeen” to the strange lift of “Bad Devil” and the drive of “War” and “Wild Colonial Boy,” the songs change expression dizzyingly. It is intriguing how a grandiosity that even drifts toward a Broadway-like scale coexists with rock’s immediacy in a distinctive balance. The arrangements are so dense that a different detail appears with each listen. Even so, the emotional axis stays consistently clear, keeping the chaos from ending as mere confusion. Packing excess and delicacy onto the same screen, it is a record with Devin Townsend’s imagination in full bloom — a dense, distinctive work counted among his early landmarks.
