『Diamond Star Halos』は、DEF LEPPARDの代名詞である重厚なコーラス、煌びやかなギター、ポップ・ソングとしての推進力を、より自由な曲構成へと広げた作品だ。ハード・ロックの骨格は保ちながら、グラム、サイケデリア、アコースティックな色彩までを自然に取り込み、長いキャリアの引き出しを惜しみなく開いている。タイトルはT・レックスの名曲“Get It On”の歌詞に由来し、バンドのグラム・ロックへの敬愛を示している。 “Take What You Want”“Kick”“Fire It Up”“SOS Emergency”といった楽曲では、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。カントリー／ブルーグラス界の名歌手アリソン・クラウスを迎えた“This Guitar”“Lifeless”のような楽曲も、作品に独特の彩りを添えている。“Kick”“U Rok Mi”“Angels (Can't Help You Now)”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。コロナ禍の期間にリモートで制作された本作は、メンバーが物理的に離れていながらも強固なバンド・サウンドを作り上げている。大作志向と親しみやすいメロディが両立した本作は、バンドの“らしさ”を現在形で更新する、力強い一枚である。長いキャリアを経てなお、その創造力は少しも衰えていない。

Diamond Star Halos is a work on which DEF LEPPARD widened their signature weighty choruses, glittering guitar and pop-song drive into freer song construction. Keeping the frame of hard rock while naturally taking in glam, psychedelia and even acoustic colors, it opens the drawers of a long career without reserve. The title derives from the lyrics of T. Rex’s classic “Get It On,” showing the band’s love of glam rock. On “Take What You Want,” “Kick,” “Fire It Up” and “SOS Emergency,” the band’s full playing breathes. Songs like “This Guitar” and “Lifeless,” welcoming the acclaimed country/bluegrass singer Alison Krauss, add a distinctive color to the work too. Balancing epic ambition and accessible melody, it is a powerful record that updates the band’s character in the present tense. Even after a long career, their creativity has not dimmed in the least.
