『Machine Head』は、DEEP PURPLE第2期の五人が、リフ、即興、歌、グルーヴというそれぞれの強みを、驚くほど無駄のない形で結び付けた代表作である。リッチー・ブラックモアのギターは鋭く簡潔なフレーズから一気に火をつけ、ジョン・ロードのハモンド・オルガンは単なる伴奏ではなく、ギターと対等に競り合うもう一つの主役になる。イアン・ペイスのドラムとロジャー・グローヴァーのベースは、複雑な場面でも推進力を失わず、イアン・ギランの高く張り上げる歌が曲の熱を決定づける。 “Highway Star”の疾走感から“Maybe I’m a Leo”の粘るリズム、“Pictures of Home”の緊密なアンサンブル、“Lazy”のブルースと即興性まで、各曲は異なる入口からバンドの強さを示す。“Smoke on the Water”はあまりにも有名なリフゆえに単純な曲として扱われがちだが、抑えたビート、歌と演奏の間合い、そして全員が同じ重心を共有する感覚が、この曲を巨大なものにしている。終盤の“Space Truckin’”も含め、本作には技巧を見せびらかすための演奏がない。五人が互いの反応を受けて、最小限の材料を最大の熱量へ変えていく。70年代ハード・ロックの標準を作っただけでなく、バンド演奏の会話が最も高い密度で記録された一枚だ。

Machine Head is a defining Deep Purple album from the Mark II lineup, joining riff, improvisation, vocal power, and groove with astonishing economy. Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar lights the fuse with sharp, simple phrases, while Jon Lord’s Hammond organ becomes not accompaniment but an equal lead voice, constantly challenging the guitar. Ian Paice’s drums and Roger Glover’s bass keep the music in motion even when the arrangements become intricate, and Ian Gillan’s high, forceful vocal fixes the level of heat in every song. From the headlong rush of “Highway Star” and the sticky rhythm of “Maybe I’m a Leo” to the tightly locked ensemble of “Pictures of Home” and the bluesy improvisational space of “Lazy,” every track reveals the band’s strengths from a different angle. “Smoke on the Water” is so famous that it is sometimes treated as a simple riff song, but its huge impact comes from the restrained beat, the timing between the vocal and instruments, and the sense that all five musicians share the same center of gravity. With “Space Truckin’” closing the record, there is no display of technique merely for its own sake. The group turns the smallest amount of material into the greatest possible heat by reacting to one another in real time. More than a template for 1970s hard rock, it is an exceptionally concentrated document of band interplay.
