『=1』は、DEEP PURPLEが新たなギタリストとしてサイモン・マクブライドを迎えながら、長年の核である即興性、リフの切れ味、そして揺るぎないグルーヴを、改めて力強く再確認した一枚だ。ハード・ロックの基本形を熟知しているからこそ、曲は必要以上に飾らず、それでいて演奏の会話には、余裕と豊かな遊びがある。ベテランの円熟と、新たな才能が生む刺激とが同居する作品である。 冒頭“Show Me”の推進力、“Portable Door”のキャッチーさ、“Sharp Shooter”の攻撃性、そして“Pictures of You”のメロディまで、収録曲はいずれも充実している。鍵盤とギターが交わす軽妙な応答、低音とドラムが力強く押し出す跳ね、そして歌を支えるブルージーな感触。そのすべてが、伝統を博物館に飾るのではなく、あくまで現在のバンド・サウンドとして、生き生きと動かしている。 マクブライドのギターは、過去のギタリストたちへの敬意を保ちながらも、確かに新しい風をバンドに吹き込んでいる。円熟を決して静的なものにはせず、現在進行形のロックとして鳴らす、DEEP PURPLEらしい一枚だ。長いキャリアを経てなお、その創作意欲が全く衰えていないことを示す、力強く充実した作品と言える。

=1 is a record on which Deep Purple, welcoming Simon McBride as a new guitarist, again powerfully reaffirms its longtime core: improvisation, the bite of the riffs and an unshakable groove. Precisely because it knows the basic form of hard rock, the songs are not over-decorated, yet the dialogue of the playing has ease and rich play. A work where a veteran’s maturity and the stimulation of new talent coexist. From the drive of the opener “Show Me” and the catchiness of “Portable Door” to the aggression of “Sharp Shooter” and the melody of “Pictures of You,” every song is fulfilling. The light responses keys and guitar exchange, the bounce bass and drums powerfully push, and the bluesy feel that supports the singing — all of it moves livelily as a present-day band sound rather than displaying tradition in a museum. McBride’s guitar, while keeping respect for the past guitarists, surely breathes a new wind into the band. Never letting maturity become static, sounding it as ongoing rock, it is a record in Deep Purple’s manner. Showing that even after a long career its creative drive has not dimmed at all, it is a powerful, fulfilling work.
