『The Ultra-Violence』は、1982年にサンフランシスコ・ベイエリアで結成されたアメリカのスラッシュ・メタル・バンド、DEATH ANGELのデビュー作だ。フィリピン系の従兄弟同士だったロブ・カヴェスタニー（ギター）、ガス・ペパ、デニス・ペパ、アンディ・ガリオンに、マーク・オセゲダ（ヴォーカル）を加えた5人が、まだ全員10代——ドラマーのガリオンにいたっては14歳——のときに録音した、驚異的な一枚である。DEATH ANGELは、METALLICAやEXODUS、TESTAMENTと並ぶベイエリア・スラッシュの中核として、スラッシュ第二世代を牽引していく存在である。 METALLICAのカーク・ハメットがプロデュースしたデモ「Kill as One」の評判がEnigma Recordsとの契約を呼び込み、本作はわずか3日で録音された。複雑に折れ曲がるリフと若々しい疾走感で、ベイエリア・スラッシュに鮮烈な個性を刻んでいる。“Thrashers”“Voracious Souls”“Kill as One”といった攻撃的な楽曲に加え、10分に及ぶインストの表題曲が、若きバンドの並外れた技量を物語る。荒削りな熱量が全編に漲る、スラッシュの名盤である。

The Ultra-Violence is the debut by Death Angel, the American thrash metal band formed in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1982. It is an astonishing record, recorded by the five members — Rob Cavestany (guitar), Gus Pepa, Dennis Pepa, Andy Galeon, all Filipino-American cousins, plus Mark Osegueda (vocals) — while they were all still teenagers, with drummer Galeon just 14. Death Angel would go on to lead the second wave of thrash as a core of the Bay Area scene alongside Metallica, Exodus and Testament. The reputation of the "Kill as One" demo, produced by Metallica's Kirk Hammett, drew a deal with Enigma Records, and this album was recorded in a mere three days. With intricately twisting riffs and youthful drive, it carves a vivid identity into Bay Area thrash. Alongside aggressive songs like "Thrashers," "Voracious Souls" and "Kill as One," the 10-minute instrumental title track testifies to the young band's extraordinary skill.
