Frolic Through the Park

『Frolic Through the Park』は、スラッシュの鋭さに実験的なリズムと異色の展開を加え、DEATH ANGELが個性を押し広げた第2作だ。デビュー作の直球のスラッシュから一歩踏み出し、ファンクやオルタナティヴ的なリズム、多様な楽曲構成を取り入れている。Enigma Recordsからの最後のスタジオ作である。本作は後にバンド自身から「異色作」とも評されるが、リリース当時は成功を収め、日本ツアーを完売させるなど国際的な人気を広げた。 MTVのヘッドバンガーズ・ボールで頻繁にオンエアされた“Bored”は、映画『レザーフェイス』のサウンドトラックにも起用された代表曲だ。エース・フレーリー作のKISSの楽曲“Cold Gin”のカバーも収録し、バンドの遊び心を覗かせている。冒頭の“3rd Floor”“Road Mutants”の疾走感から、7分に及ぶ“Confused”まで、振れ幅の大きな楽曲が並ぶ。同じ5人の布陣による、多彩さと若さの入り混じった意欲作である。その商業的な成功が、メジャー・レーベルGeffenとの契約や、バンドをより大きな舞台へと押し上げていく契機となった。

Frolic Through the Park is Death Angel's second album, on which they added experimental rhythms and unusual developments to thrash's sharpness to widen their individuality. Stepping beyond the debut's straight-ahead thrash, it takes in funk and alternative-leaning rhythms and varied song structures. It is their last studio album on Enigma Records. The band itself has since called it an odd entry in their catalog, but it succeeded on release, selling out Japanese tours and expanding their international following. "Bored," aired frequently on MTV's Headbangers Ball, is a signature song also used on the soundtrack to the film Leatherface. A cover of Kiss's "Cold Gin," written by Ace Frehley, is also included, showing the band's playful side. From the drive of the openers "3rd Floor" and "Road Mutants" to the seven-minute "Confused," songs of wide range line up. An ambitious work by the same five-man lineup, mixing variety with youth. That commercial success helped draw a major-label deal with Geffen and pushed the band onto a bigger stage.
