The Evil Divide

『The Evil Divide』は、DEATH ANGELが前作で確立した現代的なスラッシュを、さらに引き締まった形でまとめた第8作だ。マーク・オゼグエダとロブ・カヴェスタニー、テッド・アギラー、ダミアン・シソン、ウィル・キャロルという安定した編成で制作された。プロデュースは引き続きジェイソン・スーコフ。速い曲では鋭いリフが次々に切り替わり、少しテンポを落とした場面ではメロディとヴォーカルの表情が際立つ。 “The Moth”“Father of Lies”では、猛烈な疾走と重いリフが交錯する。攻撃的でありながら、曲の中に光と影が同居するのがこのバンドらしさだ。ただ暴走するだけでなく、フックや展開、演奏の対話が丁寧に積み上げられている。目立つリフやサビだけでなく、音の重さやリズムの呼吸が曲順の中でどう変化するかにも、このバンドの妙味がある。“Hell to Pay”“The Electric Cell”のような楽曲では、複雑な展開と力強いフックが結び付いている。安定したラインナップによる演奏は、緊密で密度が高い。知性と勢いを両立させた本作は、円熟期のDEATH ANGELがなお鋭い牙を保っていることを鮮やかに示す一枚である。

The Evil Divide is the eighth album, on which Death Angel gathered the modern thrash established on the previous record into an even tighter form. It was made with the stable lineup of Mark Osegueda, Rob Cavestany, Ted Aguilar, Damien Sisson and Will Carroll. Jason Suecof produced again. On fast songs, sharp riffs switch one after another, and on slightly slower passages, the expression of melody and vocals stands out. On "The Moth" and "Father of Lies," furious speed and heavy riffs intersect. Aggressive yet holding both light and shadow within the songs is the band's character. Rather than merely racing, hooks, development and the conversation of the playing are carefully built up. Balancing intelligence with momentum, the album vividly shows that Death Angel in its mature period still keeps sharp fangs.
