『The Mind's I』は、DARK TRANQUILLITYが切り裂くようなギター、低い咆哮、哀感のある旋律を組み合わせ、前作で確立した様式をさらに研ぎ澄ませた初期の重要作だ。デビュー作からの荒々しさを受け継ぎつつ、演奏はより引き締まり、緻密さを増している。疾走する場面でも音は明るくなり切らず、常に冷えた空気と内省的な重さを保ち続ける。複雑に入り組んだ曲構成の中でも、メロディが確かな輪郭を描き、聴き手を迷わせることがない。 “Dreamlore Degenerate”“Zodijackyl Light”“Hedon”“Constant”といった楽曲では、鋭利なリフと旋律的なギター・ワークが緊密に噛み合い、そこへ徐々に存在感を増すキーボードが冷たい彩りを添える。“Scythe, Rage and Roses”“Dissolution Factor Red”“Still Moving Sinews”“The Mind's Eye”といった楽曲でも、目まぐるしく展開するリフと冷たい旋律が緊張感を絶やさない。のちの実験的な拡張やより磨かれた洗練へ向かう前の、荒々しくも知的な魅力を凝縮した一枚であり、ヨーテボリ勢の中でもバンド固有の個性を強く印象づける作品となっている。

The Mind's I is an important early album on which DARK TRANQUILLITY combined slashing guitars, low roars and melancholy melody to further hone the style established on the previous record. Inheriting the rawness of the debut while the playing grows tighter and denser, it never brightens fully even in racing passages, always keeping a cold air and introspective weight. Amid intricately tangled song structures, the melody still draws a firm outline and never leaves the listener adrift. On “Dreamlore Degenerate,” “Zodijackyl Light,” “Hedon” and “Constant,” sharp riffs and melodic guitar work mesh tightly, with keyboards of growing presence adding cold color. On “Scythe, Rage and Roses,” “Dissolution Factor Red,” “Still Moving Sinews” and “The Mind's Eye” too, dizzyingly unfolding riffs and cold melody keep the tension unbroken. Concentrating a raw yet intellectual appeal before the later experimental expansion and more polished refinement, it is a record that strongly imprints the band’s own identity even among the Gothenburg ranks.
