『Haven』は、DARK TRANQUILLITYが冷たいシンセサイザーと硬質なギターを重ね、メロディック・デスに電子的な陰影を大きく加えた転換点となる作品だ。マーティン・ブランドストレムがもたらすキーボードとエレクトロニクスの層が、ミカエル・スタンネの声に都市的な孤独感を与え、曲は複雑ながらもメロディの輪郭を常に明瞭に保っている。ヘヴィさを保ったまま空間表現を広げた、後年へとつながる方向性がここに明確に現れている。 “The Wonders at Your Feet”“Indifferent Suns”“Feast of Burden”“The Same”といった楽曲では、疾走感と旋律美が電子的な質感と溶け合い、インストゥルメンタルの表題曲“Haven”が作品に静かな余白を与える。“Not Built to Last”“Fabric”“Rundown”“Emptier Still”といった楽曲でも、硬質なリフと電子的な浮遊感が独特のバランスで共存している。前作『Projector』での実験を、より一貫したバンド・サウンドへと昇華させた本作は、DARK TRANQUILLITYらしさが一つの型に収まらず立体的に浮かび上がる、洗練された美しさを湛えた一枚である。

Haven is a turning-point album on which DARK TRANQUILLITY layered cold synthesizers over hard guitars, greatly adding electronic shadow to melodic death. The layers of keyboard and electronics brought by Martin Brändström lend an urban loneliness to Mikael Stanne’s voice, and the songs, though complex, always keep the outline of the melody clear. Widening its spatial expression while retaining heaviness, the direction that would carry into later years appears distinctly here. On “The Wonders at Your Feet,” “Indifferent Suns,” “Feast of Burden” and “The Same,” drive and melodic beauty melt into electronic texture, while the instrumental title track “Haven” gives the album quiet breathing room. On “Not Built to Last,” “Fabric,” “Rundown” and “Emptier Still” too, hard riffs and an electronic floating quality coexist in a distinctive balance. Sublimating the experiments of Projector into a more consistent band sound, it is a refined, beautiful record on which the essence of DARK TRANQUILLITY rises three-dimensionally rather than settling into a single mold.
