『Damage Done』は、DARK TRANQUILLITYが冷たいキーボードの質感、切れ味鋭いギター、ミカエル・スタンネの深いグロウルを密接に結び付け、攻撃性と叙情を極めて高い次元で両立させた名作だ。前2作で追求した電子的な要素を、疾走するメロディック・デスの中へ完全に統合し、現在に至るバンドの核となるサウンドをここで確立した。攻撃性は非常に高いが、曲には北欧らしい寂寥感が濃く漂い、メロディが強い余韻を残す。 “Monochromatic Stains”“Final Resistance”“Cathode Ray Sunshine”“The Treason Wall”といった楽曲では、激しいリフの下で鳴るシンセサイザーが、作品全体に都市的で陰鬱な空気を与える。“Hours Passed In Exile”“Single Part of Two”“The Enemy”“I, Deception”といった楽曲でも、疾走と叙情が一体となった密度の高い展開が続く。“Format C: For Cortex”“White Noise / Black Silence”の緊張感から“Ex Nihilo”の締めくくりまで、隙のない構成が貫かれている。ヘヴィさと哀感を融合させたその完成度は、バンドの代表作にして、メロディック・デス・メタルの一つの金字塔として今日まで高く評価され続けている。

Damage Done is a masterpiece on which DARK TRANQUILLITY tightly bound cold keyboard texture, keen-edged guitars and Mikael Stanne’s deep growl, balancing aggression and lyricism at an extremely high level. Fully integrating the electronic elements pursued on the previous two albums into racing melodic death, it established here the core sound that carries through to the present. The aggression is very high, yet a Nordic desolation hangs thickly over the songs, and the melody leaves a strong afterglow. On “Monochromatic Stains,” “Final Resistance,” “Cathode Ray Sunshine” and “The Treason Wall,” the synthesizer sounding beneath fierce riffs gives the whole album an urban, gloomy air. On “Hours Passed In Exile,” “Single Part of Two,” “The Enemy” and “I, Deception” too, dense passages where drive and lyricism act as one continue. From the tension of “Format C: For Cortex” and “White Noise / Black Silence” to the closing “Ex Nihilo,” a flawless construction runs throughout. Its accomplishment in fusing heaviness with sorrow keeps it highly regarded to this day as one of the band’s signature works and a landmark of melodic death metal.
