『Character』は、DARK TRANQUILLITYが低く刻むギター、機械的なリズム、冷たいキーボードを重ね、これまで以上に鋭く張り詰めた空間を作り上げた作品だ。前作『Damage Done』で確立したサウンドを、より攻撃的でストレートな方向へ推し進め、疾走感と密度をいっそう高めている。アルバム全体を通じて速度と攻撃性が際立ち、バンドのカタログの中でも特にストレートで激しい一枚となっている。ミカエル・スタンネの声は激しさの中にも言葉の輪郭を残し、無機質な音像に強い人間味を与えている。 “The New Build”“Lost to Apathy”“The Endless Feed”“Mind Matters”といった楽曲では、切迫したリフと旋律的なフックが一体となり、暗さだけに沈まない構成の妙が光る。“Out of Nothing”“One Thought”“Dry Run”“Senses Tied”といった楽曲でも、機械的な反復と旋律の緊張が高密度で噛み合い、息をつかせぬ推進力を生む。攻撃性を全面に押し出しつつ、イェーテボリ由来の感性をさらに洗練させた本作は、硬質でありながら感情の熱を失わない、充実したメロディック・デスの一枚である。

Character is an album on which DARK TRANQUILLITY layered low-chugging guitars, mechanical rhythm and cold keyboards to build a space more sharply taut than ever. Pushing the sound established on Damage Done in a more aggressive, direct direction, it heightens the drive and density further. Speed and aggression stand out across the whole album, making it one of the most straight-ahead and ferocious in the band’s catalog. Mikael Stanne’s voice keeps the outline of words even within the ferocity, giving strong humanity to the inorganic sonic image. On “The New Build,” “Lost to Apathy,” “The Endless Feed” and “Mind Matters,” urgent riffs and melodic hooks act as one, and the craft of a structure that never sinks into darkness alone stands out. On “Out of Nothing,” “One Thought,” “Dry Run” and “Senses Tied” too, mechanical repetition and melodic tension mesh at high density, generating a breathless drive. Pushing aggression to the front while further refining a Gothenburg sensibility, it is a full melodic-death record that stays hard-edged without losing emotional heat.
