Sign of Madness

『Sign of Madness』は、バンドが自分たちの音を壊しにかかった作品である。トーマス・トルセーンの後任には、マッティ・アルフォンゼッティが入った。スウェーデンで最も強い歌い手の一人と目され、大物との仕事も多い人物である。だが本当に異様なのは、彼らが選んだプロデューサーの方だ。トーマス・スコッグスバリ——バンド自身が「king of trash」と呼ぶ、ストックホルムのデスメタルの音そのものを作り上げた男である。 理由は明快だった。もっと生々しくしたい、それができるのは彼しかいない。バンドはそう考えて連絡を取り、スコッグスバリの側も、メロディック・ハード・ロックやAORをより攻撃的に録るという発想を即座に気に入ったという。北欧メロディック・ハードのバンドが、あえて対極の音場の設計者を呼んだわけである。1999年と2000年の二枚が定型の内側にいたことを思えば、この人選そのものが答えになっている。

Sign of Madness is the record where the band set about breaking their own sound. Matti Alfonzetti came in for Thomas Thorsén — regarded as one of the strongest singers in Sweden, with a lot of big names behind him. But the genuinely strange choice was the producer: Tomas Skogsberg, the man the band themselves call the king of trash, and the man who built the sound of Stockholm death metal. The reasoning was plain. They wanted to be rawer, and if anyone could do it, it was him. So they got in touch, and by the band's account Skogsberg immediately liked the idea of melodic hard rock and AOR recorded more aggressively. A Nordic melodic hard rock band had deliberately hired the architect of the opposite sound. Given that the two records before this sat inside the template, the choice of producer is itself the answer.
