Rest in Sleaze

『Rest in Sleaze』は、太いギター、跳ねるビート、挑発的な歌を前面に出したスリーズ・ロックのデビュー作だ。2000年にストックホルムで結成されたCRASHDIETは、ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズの未発表曲から名前を採ったという。デイヴ・レパード(ヴォーカル/ギター)、マーティン・スウィート(ギター)、ピーター・ロンドン(ベース)、エリック・ヤング(ドラム)という編成で、2004年にユニヴァーサルと契約。彼ら自身の言によれば、10年以上ぶりにメジャーと契約したスリーズ・ロック・バンドだった。 80年代グラムの大きなコーラスを受け継ぎながら、演奏にはより荒いパンクの手触りがある。短い曲が次々にフックを繰り出し、退廃的でありながら祝祭的な勢いを保つ。“Riot in Everyone”“Breakin' the Chainz”“Knokk 'Em Down”“It's a Miracle”の4曲がシングルとなり、本国チャートで12位に。英国ダウンロード・フェスにも出演した。だが翌2006年1月、中心にいたレパードが25歳で世を去る。CRASHDIETの初期像を強烈に刻んだ、攻撃的でキャッチーな一枚である。

Rest in Sleaze is the sleaze rock debut, pushing thick guitar, springing beats and provocative singing to the front. Formed in Stockholm in 2000, Crashdïet reportedly took their name from an unreleased Guns N' Roses song. With Dave Lepard (vocals/guitar), Martin Sweet (guitar), Peter London (bass) and Eric Young (drums), they signed to Universal in 2004 — by their own reckoning the first sleaze rock band on a major label in over ten years. While inheriting the big choruses of 1980s glam, the playing has a rougher punk touch. Short songs throw out hooks one after another, keeping a momentum that is decadent and celebratory at once. Four songs became singles — “Riot in Everyone,” “Breakin' the Chainz,” “Knokk 'Em Down” and “It's a Miracle” — and the album reached No. 12 at home; they also played the UK's Download Festival. But in January 2006, Lepard, the man at the center, died at 25. A record that carved out the early Crashdïet image fiercely — aggressive and catchy.
