Warpaint

『Warpaint』は、BUCKCHERRYがブルースを含んだハード・ロックの重さと、ジョシュ・トッドのむき出しのヴォーカルを前面に置いた作品だ。曲はコンパクトで、ギター・リフとビートがまず身体に届き、その上に荒々しくも覚えやすいメロディが乗っている。ギタリストのキース・ネルソン脱退後、新たな体制で制作された一枚である。 “Warpaint”“Right Now”“Bent”“No Regrets”といった楽曲では、洗練よりもライブ感、複雑さよりも衝動を選ぶ姿勢が、バンドの魅力を素直に伝えている。ナイン・インチ・ネイルズの“Head Like a Hole”の大胆なカヴァーを含めても、アルバム全体の芯は一貫している。“Radio Song”“Closer”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。“The Vacuum”“Back Down”“The Hunger”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は長年ギタリストを務めたキース・ネルソンの脱退という大きな変化を経て制作されたが、メンバー・チェンジを乗り越えバンドの持ち味である荒々しいハード・ロックは少しも揺らいでおらず、ジョシュ・トッドを中心とした新体制の力強さを示す一枚だ。汗と埃の匂いがする、現代的なアメリカン・ハード・ロックだ。

Warpaint is a work on which BUCKCHERRY foregrounded the weight of blues-inflected hard rock and Josh Todd’s bare vocals. The songs are compact, with the guitar riff and beat reaching the body first, and a rough yet memorable melody riding on top. It is a record made under a new lineup after guitarist Keith Nelson left. On “Warpaint,” “Right Now,” “Bent” and “No Regrets,” a stance of choosing live feel over refinement and impulse over complexity conveys the band’s appeal plainly. Even including a bold cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Head Like a Hole,” the core of the whole album is consistent. Songs like “Radio Song” and “Closer” breathe the band’s full playing too. It is modern American hard rock that smells of sweat and dust.
