『Boston』は、トム・ショルツの重ねられたギターと緻密なスタジオワークを、ブラッド・デルプの高く澄んだ歌声が貫くデビュー作だ。MITで機械工学を学びポラロイド社の技師でもあったショルツが、自宅の地下スタジオで長い時間をかけて磨き上げた音が詰まっている。ショルツ(ギター/キーボード)、デルプ(ヴォーカル)に、バリー・グドロー(ギター)、フラン・シーハン(ベース)、シブ・ハシアン(ドラム)が加わった編成である。曲はハード・ロックの厚みを持ちながら、メロディとコーラスが一度で耳に残るほど明快に設計されている。 “More Than a Feeling”の開放感、“Peace of Mind”の力強さ、“Foreplay/Long Time”の展開は、バンドが持つ技術と親しみやすさを同時に示す。“More Than a Feeling”は全米5位のヒットとなり、アルバムは17倍プラチナに達して当時のアメリカ史上最も売れたデビュー作となった。“Rock & Roll Band”や“Smokin'”のようなストレートな楽曲でも、ギターの厚みと歌の伸びが一体となる。ショルツの多重録音の手法は当時としては画期的で、後のスタジオ制作に大きな影響を与えた。細部まで作り込まれた音が自然な高揚感として届く、アリーナ・ロックの原点である。

Boston is the debut album on which Brad Delp's high, clear voice runs through Tom Scholz's layered guitars and meticulous studio work. It is packed with sound that Scholz — an MIT mechanical-engineering graduate and Polaroid engineer — polished over a long time in his home basement studio. The lineup adds Barry Goudreau (guitar), Fran Sheehan (bass) and Sib Hashian (drums) to Scholz (guitar/keyboards) and Delp (vocals). The songs have the thickness of hard rock, yet the melodies and choruses are designed so clearly that they stick after a single listen. The openness of "More Than a Feeling," the power of "Peace of Mind" and the development of "Foreplay/Long Time" show the band's technique and approachability at once. "More Than a Feeling" became a US number 5 hit, and the album reached 17x Platinum, becoming the best-selling debut in US history at the time.
