『Mafia』は、太く歪んだギターと重いグルーヴを中心に、ザック・ワイルドのしゃがれた歌が強く響く作品だ。直線的なヘヴィ・ロックの中にも、アコースティックな陰影やブルース感が残されている。リフの圧力とメロディの寂しさが交差し、単なる力押しでは終わらない、幅のある表情を見せている。 “Fire It Up”“Suicide Messiah”“Death March”といった楽曲では、重量級のリフと攻撃性が前面に出ている。とりわけバラード“In This River”は、悲劇的な最期を遂げた盟友、パンテラのダイムバッグ・ダレルに捧げられた楽曲として知られ、深い哀悼と美しいメロディで多くのリスナーの胸を打った。“You Must Be Blind”“Spread Your Wings”のような楽曲にも、叙情的な魅力が息づいている。“Forever Down”“Been a Long Time”“Dirt On the Grave”といった楽曲にも、重量感と哀愁が同居している。アルバム・タイトルとジャケットのイメージはバンドが持つ結束感と無骨な美学を象徴しており、とりわけ“In This River”は今なおライヴで演奏され続ける、バンドを代表する楽曲の一つとなった。BLSの硬派な存在感を、幅のある表情で示した、充実の一枚である。

Mafia is a work centered on thick, distorted guitar and heavy groove, on which Zakk Wylde’s hoarse singing rings strongly. Within its linear heavy rock, acoustic shadow and blues feel remain. The pressure of the riffs and the loneliness of the melody intersect, showing a wide-ranging expression that never ends as mere brute force. On “Fire It Up,” “Suicide Messiah” and “Death March,” heavy riffs and aggression come to the front. In particular, the ballad “In This River” is known as a song dedicated to his close friend Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, who met a tragic end, striking many listeners with its deep mourning and beautiful melody. Songs like “You Must Be Blind” and “Spread Your Wings” breathe a lyrical appeal too. Showing BLS’s hard-nosed presence with a wide-ranging expression, it is a full record.
