『Hangover Music Vol. VI』は、BLACK LABEL SOCIETYが重いリフ中心の姿から少し距離を取り、アコースティック・ギター、ピアノ、哀感のあるメロディへと向かった、異色の作品だ。ザック・ワイルドの歌は力強さを保ちながらも、より傷つきやすく繊細な表情を見せている。バンドの硬派なイメージの奥にある、ソングライターとしての一面が深く掘り下げられている。 “Crazy or High”“Queen of Sorrow”“Woman Don't Cry”といった楽曲では、静かでありながらギターの存在感が強く残っている。とりわけ“Layne”は、2002年に世を去ったアリス・イン・チェインズのレイン・ステイリーに捧げられた楽曲であり、深い哀悼の念が込められている。プロコル・ハルムの名曲“Whiter Shade of Pale”のカヴァーも収録されている。タイトルの「Vol. VI」は、これがバンドの6作目にあたることを示している。“Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”“Damage Is Done”“No Other”といった楽曲にも、繊細で叙情的なメロディが息づいており、重量級のイメージとは異なるバンドの奥深い一面を示している。暗い温度とロックの手触りが同居する本作は、バンドの意外な奥行きを示す、味わい深い一枚である。

Hangover Music Vol. VI is a singular work on which BLACK LABEL SOCIETY took a little distance from its heavy-riff-centered form and turned toward acoustic guitar, piano and melancholy-tinged melody. Zakk Wylde’s singing keeps its strength while showing a more fragile, delicate expression. The songwriter side behind the band’s hard-nosed image is deeply explored. On “Crazy or High,” “Queen of Sorrow” and “Woman Don't Cry,” the guitar’s presence remains strong even while quiet. In particular, “Layne” is a song dedicated to Layne Staley of Alice in Chains, who died in 2002, carrying a deep sense of mourning. A cover of Procol Harum’s classic “Whiter Shade of Pale” is also included. With a dark temperature and a rock feel coexisting, it is a flavorful record showing the band’s unexpected depth.
