The Wicked Symphony

『The Wicked Symphony』は、AVANTASIAが大仰なコーラス、叙情的なメロディ、複数の歌声を重ね、壮大なロック・オペラの感覚を磨き上げた作品だ。長尺の曲でも展開は流麗で、劇的な場面転換が自然に曲の熱量を高めていく。同時発表された『Angel of Babylon』と対をなす、三部作の中核をなす一枚である。 “The Wicked Symphony”“Dying For An Angel”“Runaway Train”といった楽曲では、個性の異なるヴォーカルが一曲の中で役割を替えながら進んでいく。ラッセル・アレン、ヨルン・ランデ、クラウス・マイネ（スコーピオンズ）ら、豪華な顔ぶれが集う。“Scales Of Justice”“Black Wings”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作は『Angel of Babylon』と同じ日にリリースされるという野心的な試みの一環として発表され、ティム・リッパー・オーウェンズやアンドレ・マトスらさらに多くのゲストも参加している。二枚同時発表という物量にもかかわらず楽曲の質は少しも損なわれておらず、サメットの創作力の充実を強く印象付ける。壮大さと親しみやすさが高い次元で両立した、充実した一枚である。

The Wicked Symphony is a work on which AVANTASIA layered grandiose choruses, lyrical melody and multiple voices, honing a grand rock-opera feel. Even in long songs the development is flowing, and dramatic scene changes naturally raise the songs’ heat. Forming a pair with the simultaneously released Angel of Babylon, it is a record forming the core of the trilogy. On “The Wicked Symphony,” “Dying For An Angel” and “Runaway Train,” vocals of differing personality advance while swapping roles within a single song. A star cast such as Russell Allen, Jørn Lande and Klaus Meine (Scorpions) gathers. Songs like “Scales Of Justice” and “Black Wings” breathe the band’s full playing too. It is a full record on which grandeur and accessibility balance at a high level.
