『The Scarecrow』は、トビアス・サメットが多くの歌い手を配し、重厚なメタルとシアトリカルな物語性を結び付けた作品だ。各ヴォーカルは単なる豪華な参加ではなく、登場人物の感情や場面の変化を担っている。数年の充電期間を経て発表された、「スケアクロウ三部作」の幕開けとなる一枚である。 “The Scarecrow”“Another Angel Down”“The Toy Master”といった楽曲では、大きなコーラス、キーボードの色彩、ギターの疾走感が、幻想的な世界を鮮やかに広げている。ヨルン・ランデ、ロイ・カーン（元キャメロット）、そしてアリス・クーパーら、豪華なゲストが物語に命を吹き込む。“Shelter From The Rain”“Cry Just A Little”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作はサメット自身の実体験に着想を得た三部作の第1章でありより個人的で感情的な物語が展開され、“What Kind Of Love”“Devil In The Belfry”のような楽曲にも確かな手応えが感じられる、重厚さと叙情性が高い次元で融合したAVANTASIAの新たな代表作となった。メタル・オペラという形式の魅力を、より成熟した曲作りで示した一枚である。

The Scarecrow is a work on which Tobias Sammet arranged many singers, binding weighty metal and theatrical narrative. Each vocal is not merely a star cameo but carries the characters’ emotion and the changes of scenes. Released after several years of recharging, it is a record that becomes the opening of the “Scarecrow trilogy.” On “The Scarecrow,” “Another Angel Down” and “The Toy Master,” big choruses, keyboard color and guitar drive vividly spread a fantastical world. Star guests such as Jørn Lande, Roy Khan (ex-Kamelot) and Alice Cooper breathe life into the story. Songs like “Shelter From The Rain” and “Cry Just A Little” breathe the band’s full playing too. It is a record that showed the appeal of the metal-opera form with more mature songwriting.
