Inquisition Symphony

『Inquisition Symphony』は、APOCALYPTICAがチェロの低音と鋭いアタックを用い、メタルのリフを別の響きへ変換した作品だ。弦楽器だけで作られる音はクラシカルでありながら、演奏の勢いは十分にヘヴィである。前作に続くカヴァー中心の内容に、初のオリジナル曲も加わった第2作である。 “For Whom the Bell Tolls”“Nothing Else Matters”“One”といったメタリカ曲に加え、セパルトゥラの“Refuse/Resist”やパンテラの“Domination”のカヴァーも収録されている。“Harmageddon”“Inquisition Symphony”“Toreador”のような自作曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。本作にはメタリカ以外の楽曲も取り上げられ彼らの音楽的な視野の広さがうかがえ、“Fade to Black”“M.B.”のような楽曲にもバンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。カヴァーとオリジナルが違和感なく共存し、次作以降のオリジナル路線への布石となった一枚である。原曲の強さを生かしつつ、アンサンブルの緊張と余韻で独自の世界を作っている。異色の編成がメタルの可能性を広げることを示した一枚だ。

Inquisition Symphony is a work on which APOCALYPTICA, using the cello’s low end and sharp attack, converted metal riffs into a different resonance. The sound made by strings alone is classical, yet the momentum of the playing is plenty heavy. It is the second album on which, to cover-centered content continuing from the debut, their first original songs were added. Alongside Metallica songs like “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “One,” covers of Sepultura’s “Refuse/Resist” and Pantera’s “Domination” are included. Originals like “Harmageddon,” “Inquisition Symphony” and “Toreador” breathe the band’s full playing too. Using the strength of the originals, they make their own world with ensemble tension and lingering. It is a record that showed how a distinctive lineup widens the possibilities of metal.
