Schizo Deluxe

『Schizo Deluxe』は、ジェフ・ウォーターズの、切れ味鋭いギターを中心に、速く畳み掛けるリズムと、不穏で狂気じみたメロディとを、巧みに組み合わせた第11作だ。前作『All for You』に続き、デイヴ・パッデンがヴォーカルを担当。楽曲は、目まぐるしくその表情を変えていくが、その根底には、リフの持つ強烈な攻撃性と、皮肉で不気味な雰囲気とが、一貫して流れている。 冒頭“Maximum Satan”の攻撃性、“Warbird”のドラマ性、そして“Plasma Zombies”“Drive”“Like Father, Like Gun”のような曲まで、収録曲は、テクニカルでありながらも、確かなフックを備えている。高度な演奏技巧を、存分に前面に押し出しても、楽曲には、ロックンロールならではの、荒々しい推進力が、しっかりと残されている。 タイトルが示す通り、「分裂症的」なまでに、目まぐるしく展開する構成と、ANNIHILATORならではの、知性と暴力性とを、存分に楽しむことができる一枚だ。ジェフ・ウォーターズの、卓越したギター・ワークが、全編で冴え渡っている。テクニカル・スラッシュの魅力を、高い完成度で凝縮した、充実した力作と言える。狂気と技巧が同居する一枚だ。

Schizo Deluxe is the eleventh album on which, around Jeff Waters’s sharply biting guitar, fast piling rhythm and uneasy, crazed melody are deftly combined. Following the previous All for You, Dave Padden handled the vocals. The songs dizzyingly change expression, yet at their base the riffs’ powerful aggression and an ironic, eerie atmosphere consistently flow. From the aggression of the opener “Maximum Satan” and the drama of “Warbird” to cuts like “Plasma Zombies,” “Drive” and “Like Father, Like Gun,” every song, while technical, holds sure hooks. Even fully foregrounding high playing technique, a rough rock-and-roll drive firmly remains in the songs. As the title suggests, a record letting you fully enjoy a construction that develops dizzyingly to a “schizophrenic” degree and Annihilator’s own intelligence and violence. Jeff Waters’s outstanding guitar work is in sharp form throughout. Concentrating the appeal of technical thrash at high polish, it is a fulfilling, powerful work — a record where madness and technique coexist.
