『Metal』は、ANNIHILATORが、鋭いリフと、変化に富む展開を軸としながら、ヘヴィ・メタルという音楽そのものへの、深い愛情を、真正面から力強く打ち出した第12作だ。本作最大の特徴は、多数の著名なゲスト・ミュージシャンが、ゲスト・ソロなどで参加している点にある。ジェフ・ウォーターズのギターは、あくまで技術的でありながらも、常に、曲の力強い推進力を最優先している。 冒頭“Clown Parade”の攻撃性、“Operation Annihilation”のドラマ性、そして“Downright Dominate”“Couple Suicide”“Detonation”のような曲まで、収録曲は、豪華なゲストたちの個性を受け止めながらも、その核にあるのは、常に、強力なフックと、攻撃的な演奏である。多彩なゲスト・ソロが、作品に、華やかな彩りを加えている。 バンドの長い歴史と、ヘヴィ・メタルへの愛を振り返りながらも、決して懐古に留まることなく、あくまで現在進行形の、力強い熱量で鳴らしている点が本作の魅力だ。ジャンルへの、純粋な愛情が、全編にみなぎっている。豪華なゲスト陣との共演も楽しい、力強く充実したテクニカル・スラッシュ作品と言える。メタルへの愛が詰まった一枚だ。

Metal is the twelfth album on which Annihilator, with sharp riffs and varied developments at its core, powerfully puts forward head-on its deep love for heavy metal itself. Its greatest distinction is that many famous guest musicians participate with guest solos and more. Jeff Waters’s guitar, while technical, always prioritizes the songs’ powerful drive. From the aggression of the opener “Clown Parade” and the drama of “Operation Annihilation” to cuts like “Downright Dominate,” “Couple Suicide” and “Detonation,” the songs take in the gorgeous guests’ character, yet at their core are always strong hooks and aggressive playing. Varied guest solos add flamboyant color to the work. Its appeal is that, while looking back on the band’s long history and love for heavy metal, it never stops at nostalgia, sounding with ongoing, powerful intensity.
