Annihilator

セルフタイトルの『Annihilator』は、切れ味のある鋭いスラッシュ・リフ、複雑で緻密なリズム、そしてジェフ・ウォーターズらしい、ギターの閃きを凝縮した作品だ。バンド名を冠した本作は、彼らの音楽的な核を、改めて力強く提示している。硬質で骨太な攻撃性を、しっかりと保ちながらも、楽曲は、確かなフックや、意外な展開を持ち、決して一本調子には陥っていない。 ジェフ・ウォーターズのギターは、その細やかで豊かなニュアンスと、曲ごとに巧みに変化するテンションとを、追えば追うほど、その面白さが増していく。速く畳み掛ける疾走感と、じっくりと聴かせるミドルテンポの楽曲とが、バランス良く配置されており、アルバムとしての起伏も十分だ。テクニカルなギター・ワークが、全編で冴え渡っている。 派手な技巧を、ただ見せつけるだけではなく、あくまで楽曲そのものの、力強い魅力を大切にしている点が本作の魅力だ。ベテランとなってなお、ANNIHILATORの持つ、鋭いスラッシュ魂と、卓越した演奏力とは、少しも衰えていない。バンドの、確かな実力を改めて示した、力強く充実したテクニカル・スラッシュ作品と言える。ウォーターズの個性が光る一枚だ。

The self-titled Annihilator is a work concentrating sharp thrash riffs, complex, precise rhythm and the guitar flashes particular to Jeff Waters. Bearing the band’s name, it again powerfully presents their musical core. While firmly keeping hard, sturdy aggression, the songs hold sure hooks and surprising developments, never falling into monotony. The more you follow Jeff Waters’s guitar — its fine, rich nuance and the tension that deftly changes from song to song — the more its interest grows. Fast piling speed and mid-tempo songs that let you listen carefully are placed in good balance, and the album’s rise and fall is ample. Technical guitar work is in sharp form throughout. Its appeal is that, rather than merely showing off flashy technique, it values the songs’ own powerful appeal. Even as veterans, Annihilator’s sharp thrash spirit and outstanding playing have not dimmed in the least. Again showing the band’s sure ability, it is a powerful, fulfilling technical-thrash work — a record where Waters’s character shines.
