『Cycles of Pain』は、ANGRAがブラジリアンな色彩、プログレッシヴな構築、パワー・メタルの高揚を一つのドラマとしてまとめた作品だ。複雑なリズムや細かなアレンジは多いが、中心にあるのはあくまで歌メロとギターの対話である。長いキャリアを経てもなお、その創造性は少しも衰えていない一枚である。 “Ride into the Storm”“Gods of the World”“Cycles of Pain”といった楽曲では、疾走する場面では鋭いソロとツイン・ギターが火をつけ、落ち着いた場面ではアコースティックな感触や豊かなハーモニーが表情を変える。“Dead Man on Display”“Vida Seca”“Tears of Blood”のような楽曲にも、バンドの充実した演奏が息づいている。ポルトガル語のタイトルを持つ楽曲など、ブラジルらしい色彩も随所に光る。技巧を見せるための変化ではなく、曲の感情を大きくするための変化として機能している。ANGRAの多層的な魅力を、長編のように味わえる充実した一枚だ。本作はブラジルの音楽的伝統とモダンなメタルのアプローチをより深く融合させており、多彩なゲストも迎え、バンドの豊かな音楽性を存分に表現した作品である。

Cycles of Pain is a work on which ANGRA brought together Brazilian color, progressive construction and power-metal elation as a single drama. There is much complex rhythm and fine arrangement, but at the center is, after all, the dialogue of the vocal melody and the guitar. Even after a long career, it is a record on which their creativity has not dimmed in the least. On “Ride into the Storm,” “Gods of the World” and “Cycles of Pain,” in racing scenes sharp solos and twin guitars set fire, and in calm scenes an acoustic feel and rich harmony change the expression. Songs like “Dead Man on Display,” “Vida Seca” and “Tears of Blood” breathe the band’s full playing too. Characteristically Brazilian color shines throughout, such as songs with Portuguese titles. It functions not as change to show technique but as change to enlarge the songs’ emotion. It is a full record on which ANGRA’s multilayered appeal can be savored like a long feature.
