Far from the Sun

『Far from the Sun』は、AMORPHISが、重いギターを、その土台としながらも、柔らかなヴォーカル、鍵盤の豊かな広がり、そして沈み込んだ、内省的なメロディを、前面に置いた作品だ。前作までの、プログレッシヴで実験的な路線を、より歌もの寄りに、そして落ち着いた形で、まとめ上げている。極端な攻撃性よりも、あくまで、曲の持つ、独特の空気と、その深い余韻とを大切にすることで、バンド独自の、確かな陰影を作り出している。パシ・コスキネンが在籍した時期の、最後のスタジオ作にあたる。 冒頭“Day of Your Beliefs”の力強い推進力、そして“Planetary Misfortune”のドラマ性、さらに“Evil Inside”のような曲まで、収録曲は、いずれも聴き応えがある。表題曲“Far from the Sun”、そして“Mourning Soil”のような曲も、作品の充実を伝えている。静かな場面にも、AMORPHISならではの、確かな重さが、しっかりと残されている。 進歩的で、凝った楽曲構成は、あくまで、その豊かな感情を、より深めるためにこそ、巧みに使われている一枚だ。派手な変化よりも、内なる情感を、じっくりと描くことを選んだ、変化を恐れないAMORPHISの、その一面を、はっきりと示している。この後、バンドは、大きなヴォーカリストの交代という、転換期を迎えることになる。静かで深い魅力を持つ、聴き応えのある一枚と言える。

Far from the Sun is a work on which Amorphis, while keeping heavy guitar as its foundation, foregrounds soft vocals, a rich keyboard expanse and sinking, introspective melody. It pulls the progressive, experimental direction of the previous works into a more song-oriented, settled form. Rather than extreme aggression, by valuing the songs’ distinctive air and deep afterglow, it creates the band’s own sure shading. It is the last studio work of the period Pasi Koskinen belonged. From the powerful drive of the opener “Day of Your Beliefs” and the drama of “Planetary Misfortune” to a cut like “Evil Inside,” every song is engaging, while the title track “Far from the Sun” and a cut like “Mourning Soil” convey the work’s fullness. Even in quiet passages, Amorphis’s own sure weight is firmly kept. A record on which progressive, elaborate song construction is deftly used precisely to deepen the rich emotion. It clearly shows a side of Amorphis, unafraid of change, that chose to carefully draw inner emotion over flashy change. After this, the band would face a turning point of a major vocalist swap. An engaging record with a quiet, deep appeal.
